In
1998 a national survey of sightings was conducted try to map distribution,
and generally find out more about stag beetles in
Britain.
Following on from the findings of this survey, a new stag beetle survey is
being carried out this year, by Deborah Harvey of Surrey.
Deborah says that "despite being Britain’s largest beetle, very
little is known about their biology and ecology, and perhaps more
importantly, numbers seem to be falling".
You can help with this new survey. Simply visit Deborah's website at http://website.lineone.net/~djharvey
and get a copy of her monitoring form. Then fill in any sightings of stag
beetles in your area. She is also interested in any stag beetle larvae you
might find, and the type of wood they are found in.
By taking part in this survey you will be helping to fill the gaps in our
knowledge of this magnificent creature so that we can hopefully stop its
decline.
