We all know that water cannot run uphill, so how does it flow from under the ground, through the roots, all the way to the tops of trees?

Answer: It's possible that some water is drawn into the tree by capillary action, similar to the way blotting paper absorbs ink, but some trees are over 300 feet tall. A more likely explanation it that water reaches the tops of trees by a process called 'transpiration'. The leaves on the trees give off water from their surface by evaporation, and for every molecule of water that goes, another one is drawn up into the tree to replace it.
