Snuffling
and Snuggling in the Shrubbery

Male hedgehogs will be
out this month trying to impress the ladies with their passionate puffing.
It's mating time for hedgehogs, so there'll be lots of snuffling noises
coming from beneath the hedgerows.
The actual mating has to be a mutually agreed thing between the male and
female, otherwise the male could do himself a nasty injury on the prickly
spines of the female. She has to lay her spines in a flattened position
before the male can do his thing.
Mating only takes a couple of minutes, but getting the female interested in
mating can take a lot longer. To do this the male performs a nifty mating
dance, circling the female and making lots of pig-like snorting noises. It
should be enough to get any girl excited, but the females are not easily
impressed, and the dancing and snorting sometimes goes on for hours.
