Back-to-front Butterflies

Most of us view a butterfly as a thing of beauty, but in the eyes of a bird, a butterfly perched on a flower is just a colourful snack waiting to be snapped up.

When it comes to physical strength, the Hairstreak butterfly is no match against a bird, so in an effort to survive, it has evolved an amazing optical illusion that's designed to deceive its feathered predators.

Take a look at those nifty little tail-like extensions on the hind wings. To a bird they look just like antennae.  If you were a bird hunting this creature you'd want to sneak up behind it to avoid being spotted, but that's just what the hairstreak wants.  Try to sneak around those false antennae, to what looks like the back of this butterfly, and the you'll actually fly right into its line of vision, giving it plenty of time to make its escape.
